The official name is Republic of Trinidad and Tobago , whose capital is Port of Spain, located northwest of Trinidad. Scarborough is the capital of Tobago.
Trinidad and Tobago became independent from Britain on August 2 of 1962 . It became a parliamentary republic and multiparty.
The territory is administratively divided into seven counties, five municipalities (self-governing) and a semi-autonomous district (the island of Tobago).
The head of state is the president of the republic , elected by an electoral college .
President George Maxwell Richards has been in office since March 17 of 2003.
